RailwayStation.com - Aerial and Satellite Photographs of Southwest US Railroads
The following links will open a new window and take you to selected locations on the Microsoft Terraserver. The resolution varies from 16-meters down to 1-meter per pixel, which is detailed enough to recognize individual railcars and railroad roadbed. Once at the Terraserver site you can zoom, navigate and search for other
locations, and topo maps. Don't forget to come back to RailwayStation.com!
If you know of other areas that you would like to see here, email us. Be aware however, that much of the country is not covered by the Terraserver photo database.

Verde River Canyon, AZ - On this terraimage you will find the depot for the Verde Canyon Railway. It is difficult to see here, but with some careful looking you will see it. You will see a train on the tracks in front of the station. The train itself will look a little odd because this railway has an open flatcar between every coach car., hence the dark/light/dark/light appearance of the train from this view. Looking towards the middle of the train on the south side of the track and straining your eyes to the point of ruination, you will see the station itself and the 2 parking lots to the south of it across the road. If you zoom out and then click north once you will see a large dark patch. This is a tailing pile (obviously huge) from the smelting operation that once existed here. The ore came from a town known as Jerome not far from here. More on Jerome in a moment. For now, you can click north and follow the route of this railway into the Verde Canyon.
The reason I want to mention Jerome is because it is up on the mountain next to this town (Clarkdale, Arizona). If you are in this town and are a good spotter, you can watch the train leave or arrive. The whistle can be heard from Jerome. Jerome itself is a nice place to visit - it has mine tours and discusses how the railway was used to get ore from here to elsewhere. Thanks to Matthew E. Abbott
