Like Aerial Photographs of railroads? Now you can use many of the aerial photographs found here to create an exciting new simulation:
Yard Duty - The National Freight Yard Simulation
Yard Duty is a 2D overhead-view railroad game which uses actual aerial images as a backdrop for freight yards. The railroad 'system' consists of a network of interconnected yards, based on actual yards in existence across the nation. The player 'enters' a certain yard for the purpose of building and breaking down trains and directing freight cars in the direction of their destination. Yard Duty is all about delivering loaded freight cars to their proper destination.

Microsoft Train Simulator - NOW RELEASED IN USA

Microsoft Train Simulator Software (price - $44.99) The Amazon sales rank for this product is currently 1.
Microsoft Train Simulator Sybex Official Strategies and Secrets Book (preorder $15.99 - current release date is 6/12/2001 for this book)
For many years, I've been hoping for a train simulator that
would be the railroad equivalent of the many excellent flight
simulators on the market. This may be it.
The MS Train Simulator includes six train routes
from around the world with over 600 total miles of rail, with accurate
elevation and terrain data, to mirror the real-world scenery, industry,
and towns along the routes. Routes include both historic and contemporary
rail operations:
> Amtrak's new Acela high-speed train running the U.S. Northeast Corridor.
> BNSF - Marias Pass and along the southern border of Glacier National Park
> The Flying Scotsman - England's most beautiful countryside in the late 1920's
> Kyushu Railway Company - Hisatsu line on Japan's southern island of Kyushu.
> Odakyu Electric Railway - commuter lines out of Tokyo
> The Venice Simplon Orient-Express - visit the Austrian Alps in the 1930s
An open architecture, and tools that encourage enthusiasts and third-party
developers to customize and extend the product by creating new trains, routes,
scenery, and challenges. In the future, I hope to make additional route, locomotive
and rolling stock files available at this site.

Trainz - Auran
Another exciting "Virtual Model Railroad" product expected later in 2001 is Trainz.
With Trainz you will be able to:
- Collect digital 3D models of your favourite locomotives. Choose from over 100 locos currently modeled from all around the world plus we will be releasing many more for download from their website.
- Create the virtual layouts. Trainz Surveyor is an intuitive editor that allows you to build stunningly realistic routes quickly and simply.
- Control the operations of your model railroad. Choose from the engineer's view and use the 3D in-cab controls, or "train-spotter" view and use the virtual DCC controller.

Trainmaster 4.0
TRAINMASTER© is a PC based computer simulation model that
realistically replicates actual train handling and locomotive response
on real North American rail lines. Graphics and realistic sound provide
a sense and feel of actually operating a train.
New! Trainmaster now has added a downloadable demo of their simulation.

3rd PlanIt

El Dorado Software's 3dPlanit version 6 is now available.
I have included here because of a number of features:
1. You can actually run trains and even switch on the layouts you design
2. The new texture mapping features allows quite a bit of realism
3. A DXF/DWG import-export add-on makes it possible to use with other 3D design programs.
Some of the models that I use for my art gallery were exported from 3rdPlanIt.

3D Railroad Master™

Abracadata's 3D Railroad Master™ puts the player in the
engineer's seat as they roll along on the predesigned layouts
of varying difficulty. Players have total control of the trains,
first selecting rolling stock to build trains. Players arrange
custom trains by coupling and uncoupling cars in any order you
choose. After setting up their custom trains, players are ready
to begin specifying the game options. Use or edit the predefined
pick-up and delivery schedules. If players delight in difficult
situations and close calls, they can choose to control up to four
trains on a layout. You can import your own custom layouts from
3D Railroad Concept & Design™ version 1.1, including all 3D objects,
grades and elevations.
